This is the first image I have made with Maya 8.5, which I just bought last week. I put in a pretty extensive amount of time learning this software through video tutorials, and I must say I'm very happy with how I've been able to pick it up so far. I have a lot of experience with various 3D applications, but it was a bit overwhelming to try and transfer that experience into a program as large as Maya. Now that I have the basics figured out, I'm going to get back to some of my more ambitious projects, but I just had to post this for my first attempt.

Modeling was done in Maya, rendered in Mental Ray, and I used Photoshop to add the smoke effect.

that is cool. Maya is a powerful program. I'm in a Maya class in college. Theres alot to learn, but get to know the basic pretty good. Continue the good work.

Thank you for the support! It's being a little difficult at the moment, but I am learning... Slowly.

Thanks for the comment!

This is really cool =o I love the appearance of the glass

Anyway

Could you direct me to some of the video tutorials you mention? (or are they just the standard ones with the program)

I've been toying with the program a bit and It seems to just be blowing me away... It's really difficult to pick up without prior experience...

Definitely agree with your last statement. Even after the video tutorials, I'm still struggling through some of the basics. As far as the video tutorials, I finally sucked it up a month or two ago and registered for a lynda.com account. If you don't know that site, they have many hours of video tutorials on just about any program you could want to learn, $25 a month. Actually, they didn't have as many videos on Maya as I would have liked, so I'm now looking into buying one or two of the DVDs from the Gnomon Workshop. Those are unfortunately $50 each. So that's what I use; if you know of any free resources I'm missing out on, please let me know. Either way, I'm glad you liked this piece, thanks for the comment :)

An excellent render. Did you use a SSS shader on the candle? I might've added a more intense glow to the very tip of the wick, but it's a great picture as is.

I did attempt subsurface scattering, and I'm not quite sure that it worked as I expected but I like the effect anyway. Of course, I'm still very new to Maya, so I barely know what a shader is :) . Glad you like it, thank you for the comment!
